Cycle lane proposal
Overview
We have been working hard to tranform our transport system into a more efficient and safer network for citizens, while also contributing to a reduction in pollution levels. Previous research has indicated that citizens often don't feel safe cycling around Arlen Hill due to high levels of congestion and very few designated cycle routes, we aim to create a more accessible way to get everyone moving.
What is being proposed?
We are proposing to introduce a 1.7km cycle path that runs down Cheltenham Road, Arlen Hill from its intersection with Bath Buildings to its intersection with King Square Avenue. The project proposes to implement a designated cycle path and footpath on either side of the road, road humps on minor roads to slow down traffic before reaching the cycle path, and new bus stops which don't overlap with the cycle path for a safer way to move around the city. This cycle path is the first of many in Bristol but we hope it will provide a great alternative to driving which will get more people active, increase accessibility for everyone and work towards reducing emissions.
How much will it cost and when will it be done by?
The proposal is expected to cost £2 million, two thirds of which has been funded by the Department for Transport's Active Travel Fund (ATF). The remainder will be paid by the council.
If we have positive feedback from the public, we will begin implementing the cycle path in February 2025 and we anticipate it to take between six months and a year to complete.
